Again, everyone lies from time to time (see when lovers lie), but for a compulsive liar, telling lies is routine. Simply put, for a compulsive liar, lying becomes second nature. Not only do compulsive liars bend the truth about issues large and small, they take comfort in it. Telling the truth, on the other hand, is difficult and uncomfortable. But, like any addictive behavior (and/or personality disorder), getting someone to admit they have a problem with lying is the difficult part.Sadly enough, getting someone to recognize that he or she has a problem usually requires hitting rock bottom first. Take a look at several viewers’ different attempts to deal with a compulsive liar (see how I confronted a compulsive liar).("Here are some videos/documents on Vladimir Putin. Then, go out to dinner with this beautiful blonde ex-FSB agent and see if you come up with any further insights.") I suspect also that pathological liars would more predictably pass the new f MRI lie detectors; these detect binary lies ("are you this or are you not this? I think I know how the test procedure can be altered to pick this up; but I also think I know how these tests can be reliably beaten.") but pathological liars hold contradictory truths simultaneously and thus may not register as deceptive.

My take is that pathological lying is a disorder of identity; the person imagines for himself an separate identity, and then fantasizes experiences and events which may be otherwise ordinary and predictable-- he went to the museum-- but in his mind happen only to "that" person. The lies hold the clues to that identity, but they may not be obvious. For example, maybe the part of the lie that's important isn't that he saw a guy rob the gift shop and get arrested, but that he was at the -- the point is that he imagines himself a loner, or an artsy type, etc.I now have no doubt that the failure of their marriage was very likely accelerated by my friend's behaviour.Since her separation I have witnessed her manipulating her children, stalking, creating fake online profiles in her ex-husband and his partner's name, and employing cunning and subtle tactics to generate sympathy from others.
